When you see the cover, you figure you're pretty clearly looking at a fictionalized version of the Titanic story. The similarities between Robertson's work and the Titanic disaster are so astounding that one has to imagine if White Star Line built Titanic to Robertson's specs as a dare. No surprise there; it's a story that's been told over and over (there were 13 Titanic movies before Cameron's, including one by the Nazis) but Robertson's book was first. Where it Gets Weird: He was so eager to be first, apparently, that he didn't bother to wait for the Titanic to actually sink before writing about it. The Wreck of the Titan was published in 1898, 14 years before RMS Titanic was even finished being [cheaply] built. Helmet for My Pillow  Helmet for My Pillow is the personal narrative written by World War II United States Marine Corps veteran, author and military historian Robert Leckie. First published in 1957, the story begins with Leckie enlisting in the United States Marines shortly after the 1941 Attack on Pearl Harbor. The 2010 HBO mini-series The Pacific was adapted in large part from Helmet for My Pillow, along with Eugene Sledge's With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa and the personal story of Medal of Honor recipient Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone. Another downloaded (audio) library book.  I'd never heard of the author, nor the HBO series that portrayed some of the book, but I do recommend it to men. Unlike One Man's War, which I thought had some womanly appeal, Pillow is manly-man all the way.  I had a bit of a problem with the reader, whom I found too slow.  Fortunately I was able to play it at a 25% faster speed, and that was that.  You can read pages at Amazon, or listen to selected audio.  Here is 6-7 minutes that I recorded, having to do with his stay at a Navy hospital.  I think this book might be better read than listened to (but I found it good walking entertainment).

The passing of Chester Nez, one of the original 29 Navajo Code Talkers, sadly marks the end of an era in our country's and Marine Corps' history. We mourn his passing but honor and celebrate the indomitable spirit and dedication of those Marines who became known as the Navajo Code Talkers.

The Navajo Code Talkers made invaluable contributions to the war effort in the Pacific theater during World War II. Their heroic actions were recognized with the Congressional Gold Medal in 2001.

The incredible bravery, dedicated service and sacrifices of Mr. Nez and his fellow Code Talkers will forever remain part of the proud legacy of our Corps and will continue to inspire generations of Marines into the future. MARINES

Sony Pictures Imageworks is moving its headquarters from Culver City to Canada. The visual-effects unit, which employs about 270 people, said it was moving a bulk of its operations to Vancouver, where it already has a satellite studio, the Los Angeles Times reported. A small staff will remain in Los Angeles. The move will cut costs due to Canadian tax breaks, the Times said. For the moment this is just the visual effects unit, but considering how much filming is done abroad, it’s not a good sign. Movies are going where the tax credits are. Canada is already tied with California. California produced 68 percent of the top 25 movies at the worldwide box office in 1997. In 2013, it was down to eight percent. Of the 26 live-action films with production budgets over $100 million, just two — “The Hangover Part III” and “Star Trek: Into Darkness” — were filmed primarily in California. Los Angeles however won’t be getting the sequel as LA proved too expensive for Darkness’ budget. If California loses the film industry and pushes out non-Green energy companies, it’s going to be left with the tech industry and a giant welfare state that the tech industry will flee. OMFG!  California will have to raise the minimum wage again to keep tax revenues up!

Keeping to the spirit of Death Penalty Month, let's review the execution of Pvt. Eddie Slovik. Slovik's offense: desertion in wartime. (See the tie-in?) Unlike Bowe Bergdahl, who deserted his unit, according to the accounts of his comrades, Slovik never actually deserted. He also didn't call America a "disgusting" country or say he was "ashamed to be an American." Slovik was just a chicken. In October 1944, as Allied forces were sweeping through France, Slovik left his position on the front lines, walked to the rear of his unit and handed a note to the cook, confessing his desertion. The letter explained that he was "so scared" that he had already abandoned his unit once, and concluded: "AND I'LL RUN AWAY AGAIN IF I HAVE TO GO OUT THERE." Slovik was like Bradley Manning minus the lipstick and eyeliner. A lieutenant, a company commander and a judge advocate all tried to persuade Slovik to shred the letter and return to his unit, warning him that he'd be tried for desertion otherwise. Slovik refused. In the middle of World War II, the military court-martialed Slovik, tried him and sentenced him to death. Allied Supreme Commander Dwight Eisenhower denied Slovik's pardon request, saying it would encourage more desertions, just as the fighting was getting especially hot. Slovik was executed by firing squad and buried among the numbered graves of court-martialed rapists and murderers in an American military cemetery in France. Contrast Slovik's story with the beloved troop whose return just cost us the release of five of the most dangerous terrorists in the world. Three days before he walked off his base, Bergdahl emailed his parents: -- "I am ashamed to be an american." -- "The US army is the biggest joke ... It is the army of liars, backstabbers, fools and bullies." -- "These people need help, yet what they get is the most conceited country in the world telling them that they are nothing and that they are stupid." -- "The horror that is america is disgusting." They aren't, but what's just as frustrating is that CNN had the chance to question him on his new position, but failed to do so. Will the media ever call him on it?
