Horatio's Drive

Horatio's Drive

Res Ipsa Loquitur

Not that I've even for an instant thought I knew about everything, but I am still surprised by stories of significant achievement in the USA that I knew nothing about.  Horatio Nelson Jackson 's drive across the United States in 1903 is one such example.

Horatio spent $8,000 of his own money (in 1903 dollars) to win a $50 bet.  Coincidentally,  the Packard car company had been planning just such a trip for ages, and two sponsored Packards left San Francisco not long after Jackson, who was driving a used Winton touring car.  There is then some actual excitement involved, not to mention incredible hardship that would have stopped a lesser man.  A Ken Burns deal.  USA UAS USA!  It's who we were, and will be again after we get rid of Democrats.

I think you can watch it here, and certainly on NetFlix.

Did you loathe and detest the Bush administration? If so, you'd probably say its ideas were horrible and their execution worse. Did you not loathe and detest the Bush administration? In that case, you (me) might say its ideas were pretty good—only the execution often left something to be desired.

Now the person who did much of the executing tops a list of names to be Mitt Romney's running mate.

Guess who?

White House Insider: Obama Hesitated – Panetta Issued Order to Kill Osama Bin Laden

This is the crap that drives us  mad about the media refusal to report negatively on Obama, or the Democrtat Party for that matter.  Of a sudden this story (of necessity) is all over the place as breaking news. Here's some more breaking news. Obama's a liar. All elected Democrats are liars.  The media are criminally useless. It's why we can't have nice things.

Surprise, Commies run the mother ship

Vorwaerts the Obamissariat

The Obama campaign apparently didn't look backwards into history when selecting its new campaign slogan, "Forward" — a word with a long and rich association with European Marxism.

Many Communist and radical publications and entities throughout the 19th and 20th centuries had the name "Forward!" or its foreign cognates. Wikipedia has an entire section called "Forward (generic name of socialist publications)."  [Washington Times]

Conservative critics of the Obama administration have noted numerous ties to radicalism and socialists throughout Mr. Obama's history, from his first political campaign being launched from the living room of two former Weather Underground members, to appointing as green jobs czar Van Jones, a self-described communist.

Vladimir Lenin founded the publication "Vpered" (the Russian word for "forward") in 1905. Soviet propaganda film-maker Dziga Vertov made a documentary whose title is sometimes translated as "Forward, Soviet" (though also and more literally as "Stride, Soviet").

The Obamunists are handling criticism of the new "message" in their usual manner—   ridicule.

Gateway Pundit among others have vintage  "Vorwaerts" (the German word for "Forward") displays (El Jefe) .

GOP money floods battlegrounds, threatens Dems' hold on Senate

Third-party groups allied with the Republican Party have vastly outspent Democratic incumbents and their backers in Senate battlegrounds.

The disparity in advertising firepower threatens Democratic control of the Senate and could have an impact on the presidential race as well.

Sen. Sherrod Brown, a first-term Democrat from Ohio, has been the primary target of outside groups, which have outspent his allies by a ratio of 10-1 this election cycle.

I believe this is accurate.  Obama has refused to share any of his billions with the DNCC, and they're hurting.  But The HILL is  notoriously sympathetic to Democrats.  I'll guess this is published at the behest of Harry Reid for insertion into campaign donation mailings.  Scare the progressive tribe into forking over.  Like a friend of my wife who yesterday was scandalized because she heard Dan Bongino criticize Ben Cardin.  The nerve!

In this country, vices are without consequences, but ridicule can kill.
After watching the Jimmy Kimmel  roast below,  I was reminded of the movie  Ridicule

.Charles Berling stars as a cash-poor nobleman during the reign of Louis XVI. When his village is invaded by mosquitoes, he travels to Versailles to beg for the king's help. But his plans are soon diverted when he's swept into a love triangle. To survive Versailles and solve his problem, he must rely on his wit and smarts. Nominated for a 1996 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, Ridicule co-stars Fanny Ardant and Judith Godreche. (Based on a true story)

Highly recommended, especially for the witty engineers among you. The video clip contains the only NSFW material, but it's a doozy, and what caused me to think instantly of Obama and Ridicule. NetFlix of course.

Make Mitch McConnell’s Life Truly Miserable

Make Mitch McConnell’s Life Truly Miserable

Whodathunk Eric Cantor would become like Mitch McConnell, but he is.

I'm funning with Red State's Erick Erickson, whose article Conservatives Are Gaining, But Need Help Making Mitch McConnell’s Life Truly Miserable warms my little heart cockles with wit, wisdom and a call to arms.

.We’re about a week out from the Indiana Primary. Richard Mourdock now leads Barack Obama’s favorite Republican, Dick Lugar. But it is close. Surprisingly for so many conservative activists who backed Eric Cantor for his leadership position, the House Republican Leader has decided to engage in this and other races for the more moderate and liberal candidates.  [...]

Seriously, Eric Cantor’s PAC is asking Democrats to go vote to save Dick Lugar. The House Republican Leader wants Democrats to save Dick Lugar. That’s messed up.

Do what you can to make sure Indiana sends Dick Lugar home. Oh wait . . . Dick doesn’t live in Indiana anymore. That’s why his Board of Elections says he can’t vote in Indiana. Still, get him out of the Senate. [Full]
But that's not all .... In Texas, Ted Cruz is going up in the polls ... In Nebraska, Don Stenberg is closing in on Jon Bruning .... And then there is Utah. After 36 years in the Senate, Orrin Hatch just might be retired by the voters. but ....

I shan't hazard a guess at what the Congress will look like in 2013, but it is my fervent hope that the Republican aisles are packed with people who hate their Democrat colleague's ideological guts,  and wish dueling was still an option.

I would like to share an experience with you, about drinking and driving. A couple of nights ago, I was out for a few drinks and eats with some friends at the steakhouse and I had a couple of cocktails and some rather nice red wine. Knowing full well I may have been slightly over the limit, I did something I've never done before: I took a bus home. Sure enough, on the way home, I passed a police road block, but as it was a bus, they waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident, which was a real surprise, as I have never driven a bus before and am not sure where I got it.

The Trip

What a Trip
We were the first kids on the block to own a VHS player.  There were services where you could rent, and have delivered to your door a movie, and a player (BetaMax or VCR), but that seemed too expensive.  In 1982 I plunked down $1500 (12 million in 2012 money) for a  Canon video camera, portable recorder and player. MoSup was scandalized by the cost. but I reassured her that just having video memories of  the kids growing up would more than pay for it. In retrospect, I was right.

The nearest source for videos was the public library, believe it or not.  It had a modest selection of tapes, one of which was My Dinner with Andre.  Since it was a free rental, it was shown numerous times to neighbors wanting to see this fabulous VCR device.   My Dinner With Andre.  I watched it at least 5 times. What made me think of that last night was The Trip.

While not nearly as droll as Andre, The Trip is 10 times more entertaining. And funny. For the BBC aficionado I need only say " .....  starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. Steve agrees to review six restaurants in the north of England and takes Rob with him"   The entire series is available as a single movie on NetFlix. I love love loved it.

As an aside, one of our concerns with the VCR player was bringing into the house movies that were inappropriate for the kids.  To that end me and the MoSup screened every movie, using earphones, before the kids could watch.  Anyway, one of the new library movies I brought home one day was  Personal Best, a 1982 movie centered on a group of women trying to qualify for the American track-and-field team bound for the 1980 Olympic Games.  Our kids were all involved in sports, and it did come from the library, so I put it on for them, unscreened, while we made dinner.  Our kitchen reverie was interrupted however by the unmistakable sound of  pillow talk and heavy breathing.  SEX!.  I went into the den to find my kids watching slack-jawed as  Mariel Hemingway and real-life track star Patrice Donnelly engaged in, even by todays standards, graphic lesbian sex.   I watched it later at least 5 times. Then complained to the library that it ought contain a warning.

Anti-Bullying Speaker Curses Christian Teens

As many as 100 high school students walked out of a national journalism conference after an anti-bullying speaker began cursing, attacked the Bible and reportedly called those who refused to listen to his rant “pansy asses.”

The speaker was Dan Savage, founder of the “It Gets Better” project, an anti-bullying campaign that has reached more than 40 million viewers with contributors ranging from President Obama to Hollywood stars. Savage also writes a sex advice column called “Savage Love.”

This story is the new gold standard for life imitating art.
