I missed this entirely, and learned about by chance after turning on the car radio while Sean Hannity disclosed it.  The "it" being handcuffs American soldiers in Afghanistan will wear from now on. The WaTimes (Nov 16) compiled an informal list (7) of the new rules from interviews with U.S. forces. Among them: • No night or surprise searches. • Villagers have to be warned prior to searches. • ANA or ANP must accompany U.S. units on searches. • U.S. soldiers may not fire at the enemy unless the enemy is preparing to fire first. • U.S. forces cannot engage the enemy if civilians are present. • Only women can search women. • Troops can fire at an insurgent if they catch him placing an IED but not if insurgents are walking away from an area where explosives have been laid. These rules are nominally by order of Gen. McChrystal: In his Aug. 30 assessment of the situation in Afghanistan, which was leaked to the press, Gen. McChrystal said that the legitimacy of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) had been "severely damaged … in the eyes of the Afghan people" because of "an over-reliance on firepower and force protection." To succeed, he wrote, "ISAF will have to change its operating culture to pursue a counterinsurgency approach that puts the Afghan people first." This entails "accepting some risk in the short term [but] will ultimately save lives in the long term." If that doesn't sound like the voice of LBJ/ Robert S. McNamara, nothing does.  The fact that the military haven't issued the list in written form, it seems to me, means they know as much. ”

The prollem with never being challenged  by an obedient press is that, if it happens, you don't have the skill to do anything but call Fox News "an arm of the Republican Party."   Similarly, the prollem with getting away with "making science," is you no longer have appreciation for truth, let alone the moral character to stab at it.  It's pervasive, and on the subject of gun rights,  the rule.  The Freeholder wields  the scalpel: There is much in the typing (sorry, but I can't bring myself to call it "writing"), but the number of cherry-picked facts and outright lies (sorry, but I can't bring myself to call them "inaccuracies") is astounding. Based on newspaper clippings submitted by N.R.A. members, the stories dramatically show how a gun can sometimes prevent a crime and perhaps even save a victim's life. The only trouble is that is from Time, August, 1989 The NRA's American Rifleman Magazine doesn't feature that news anymore, there isn't any listing of guns saving anyone's life on their website, just a lot of ads for weapons and accessories. [Click] I didn't catch the title of this crap film, but take your pick.  And get ready for yet another cable onslaught of Algore's, now hysterically funny titled fakeudrama, An Inconvenient Truth.  It's what they do.   The problem is, the mush-minded watch this tripe, and it becomes their reality. The solution?  That's right.  We nuke Nat Geo too.  Fair warning.

I was reminded of this, went looking for it, and found it.  It could have been penned today.  “ The liberal media apologists at Columbia Journalism Review took time from their tofu and watercress sandwiches and decaf soy lattes to look down their noses at the blogosphere for exposing Memogate. Corey Pein’s article, “Blog-gate,” states that CBS “screwed up badly in Memogate — but so did those who covered the affair.” For all of Pein’s indignation, little is aimed at Dan Rather and The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight. The article is quite the contrary, as if this whole situation is the fault of the blogosphere, not the idiots at the Tiffany Network who didn’t do their homework. Right off the bat, it is obvious what tone Pein is going to take: ” It's the "formula." Okay Rodge, point made, now exit gracefully.
