Opie, you bastard!

Stupid Opie

Boned Jello

At the end of a recently watched Andy Griffith "Biography," it was disclosed that Opie (Ron Howard) had prevailed on Andy to do an "Obama for President" commercial with him.  "Andy, a life  long Democrat was happy to oblige, " intoned the announcer.  That video, "A Call to Action," traded on America's fond memories of  life in Mayberry and Happy Days to help transform a Chicago hoodlum into something wholesome.   At the time a blogger named Mary wrote:

“ "I have absolutely no problem with Howard, Griffith, and Winkler campaigning for Obama. I do have a problem with Opie Taylor, Andy Taylor, Richie Cunningham, and the Fonz campaigning for Obama." ”

As far as Griffith being a "lifelong Democrat," so too were most Southern raised boys (me included); but that political party bears no resemblance to today's collection of socialists, communists and social misfits.  We detest parents who use their children as props to advance an  agenda, but the corollary is when kids manipulate old folks who're sliding into senility for the same reason.  Which is what Ron Howard has done, IMO.

Ron Howard is a fine director, but now he seems bent on replacing Oliver Stone as filmdom's preeminent anti-American jerk-ass. I was actually startled some years ago when he aligned himself with the Barbra Streisand Hollywood left. Opie! WTF?  This isn't how you were raised.  One episode came to mind, and I went searching for it.  This was the show where Opie is taken in by a traveling hobo.  Sheriff Taylor recognizes that the guy is a no-account,  but gives Opie his head.  Here's the surprising part.  While trying to find that episode I discovered someone else for whom  Opie's Hobo Friend was transforming.  Harvey Bullock, who wrote the script.
“
”

In the end,  Andy sits with Opie on a river bank (as I remember) and explains that there's a difference between people down on their luck, in need of a helping hand, and societal leeches.  I learned from that; how come Opie didn't?  And look what the little s*it has  done to his dad now!

I realize that many of you have seen this video where Pete Stark offhandedly states that congress can do pretty much anything they please (to boos).  But what's important here is the protagonist.  She made my heart swell, knowing that there are millions like her out there,  doing battle for us.Look at the faces of the loyal Starkies in the audience, and even Stark himself.  Pure condescension.

Thanks to JMcD for the tip. Siverlight is  Microsoft's interface for watching stuff like NetFlix movies on line. Its only function appears to be keeping you from copying any portion of the content.   It will reinstall when you need it again.

If you're having trouble with Firefox, but like your add-ons, etc., get the IE Tab add-on.  It lets you view content using the IE interface in Firefox.

These musings are intended to frame a set of questions: What is the likely impact of ubiquitous surveillance on our moral personalities?

Imagine that right after briefing Adam about which fruit was allowed and which forbidden, God had installed a closed-circuit television camera in the garden of Eden, trained on the tree of knowledge. Think how this might have changed things for the better. The serpent sidles up to Eve and urges her to try the forbidden fruit. Eve reaches her hand out – in paradise the fruit is always conveniently within reach – but at the last second she notices the CCTV and thinks better of it. Result: no sin, no Fall, no expulsion from paradise. We don’t have to toil among thorns and thistles for the rest of our lives, earning our bread by the sweat of our brows; childbirth is painless; and we feel no need to wear clothes.

So why didn’t God do that and save everyone a lot of grief? True, surveillance technology was in its infancy back then, but ...

Targeted

Boned Jello

Guessing some here, because I'm again having trouble watching videos that stop every second (no 'zaggeration).  As best I can determine, this Minnesotan was so annoyed to read that Target was giving $150,000 to GOP Gubernatorial  candidate Tom Emmer, that she decided to get even,  How?  By going to Target, buying $200 worth of stuff, then returning it - with a rant.  Now, I too am annoyed when people give money to political parties I hate; the difference here being that this lady is an asshole, and I'm less of one.   If Target gave money to Emmer outright,  this is my first example of why the left went nuts when the Supremes struck down curbs on campaign contributions by business.  But, that's not what I wanted to tell you.

Martin O'Malley (D) is Maryland's current governor.  Bob Ehrlich (R) served one term preceding him, and is now running against O'Malley. See what I'm saying?  Only someone utterly contemptuous of his constituency would use the slogan "Bob Ehrlich had his chance."  Yes, yes he did.  And how did he do?  Well, Bob Ehrlich is maybe the only Republican in history to be endorsed for re-election by the Washington Post, as he was against O'Malley in 2006.  So, in that regard, O'Malley has a right to be contemptuous of the state's voters.  I know I am.

Balls

If Obama has "cojones'
and  cojoles" confused ...
Sarah Palin set him straight this morning on Fox News Sunday.

The Baltimore Examiner deliciously uses leftist attack site Media Matters' hosted video to punctuate a story that begins, "Liberals, who simply  love the word "teabaggers" are choosing  to take  Sarah Palin's use of the word,  'cojones', to mean a person who  literally has testicles,  saying Sarah is crude, rude, and low-classed."
“ What Sarah said was, " Jan Brewer has the cojones that our President does not have to look out for all Americans, not just Arizonans, but all Americans,” explaining, ”If our own President will not enforce a federal law, more power to Jan Brewer and 44 other states who are in line to help support Jan Brewer in state laws, state efforts, to do what our President won’t do....And Jan Brewer and other governors who are protecting their citizens, protecting the nation as a whole, we're very, very thankful that they're willing to go toe-to-toe and go all the way to the Supreme Court if need be and get this thing resolved."

"Conjoles" is the political tool upon which Obama  most relies,  because Sarah is right on about his not having any  "cojones", and the reliance has  rendered  him contemptibly inept, ineffective, scorned in the eyes of other countries and  almost certain to lose the majority of America's support Elections 2010 and 2012.
”

Note that Sarah did not once refer to notes scribbled on her palm.

Judge Bolton's plan?

How Judge Bolton^ Undermined Obama

unintentionally
“ When Judge Susan Bolton granted an injunction halting the enforcement of key provisions of the Arizona immigration enforcement law, she ruled in favor of the Justice Department’s position, but against the president’s political interest.

Had the judge sustained this law, it would have made moot Barack Obama’s opposition to the Arizona law. As it is, she has transformed the law into a big campaign issue against Obama. Now the president is standing in the way of a state that wants to enforce the law that he won’t.

Boned Jello
Why is this man toking?

There is, I  suppose, the possibility that Clinton appointee Judge Bolton coyly set about undermining Teh Wun and consigliere Holder, but I ain't buying it.  What if  Judge Suzy had affirmed Arizona's SB 1070 in its entirety?  A victory for the bad guys?  I don't think so. Not that it matters.  I'll settle on this. Obamunists, having painted themselves in a corner, are losers on this issue from every angle.  Brilliant job boys..

Coming This Fall

“

Harry Stein
By early 1974, I was at a magazine in New York called New Times, brought there by my closest friend from the Richmond paper, Frank Rich. ... we hit upon the idea of resurrecting Bill Scott, now Senator Scott, as the subject of a cover story. We would call it “The Ten Dumbest Congressmen” and crown Scott “The King of Dumb.” Since I obviously couldn’t do essentially the same piece again, the assignment went to the magazine’s newly minted Washington correspondent, Nina Totenberg, and I gave her all my notes. She did a masterly job, not only hunting down new material on the hapless Scott but also including among her nine other victims a few Democrats, for “balance.”

We could scarcely believe what came next. Scanning the masthead of this obscure little magazine and finding his old nemeses from the Mercury, the infuriated Scott called a press conference, thundering that this was all the doing of some left-wing kids from Richmond with an agenda—thereby turning it into a national story and confirming the thesis of the piece.

Scott never lived it down—even his obituaries mentioned the controversy. But what was never noted—there or anywhere else—was that he was right. [Harry Stein- "How the Press Got Political"]

Today's Democrat Party is pretty much a Hollywood production.  Players have a script; they read their lines. Dowdy-Doo Doo

Maureen Dowd and the Left: All Race, All the Time
It seems that only conservatives covet living in a post-racial society.

“ During the recent hullaballoo over the New Black Panthers we discovered that the real racists were not the men who shouted incendiary racial threats, but instead those at Fox News who dared to make known the Justice Department’s corruption.
”

Boned Jello

Another instance (that bored me to tears from the beginning) is the Breitbart/Sherrod yawn.  Here too Mr. Chapin throws cold water on the howling left.

“

A perusal of Mrs. Sherrod’s entire speech reveals that she is what we originally suspected: a dedicated race baiter.

She equated Republican disagreement with President Obama over the issue of socialist health care with racism.

Specifically she proclaimed:

You know, I haven’t seen such a mean-spirited people as I’ve seen lately over this issue of health care. Some of the racism we thought was buried. Didn’t it surface? Now, we endured eight years of the Bushes and we didn’t do the stuff these Republicans are doing because you have a black president.

”

Regarding Dowd:

“

Amidst 18 months of racial paranoia, aggression, and calumny better left unsaid, New York Times pundit and wannabe member of The View Maureen Dowd weighed in/added to the strife. She wrote a column seeking to nudge the Obama administration into being even more racialist than it already is.

Its title, “You’ll Never Believe What This White House Is Missing,” beggars belief.

First, Private Manning is openly homosexual. Did you know that? I didn't; if the fact has been reported in the American press, I've missed it. Moreover, Manning was an activist who demonstrated against Congress's "don't ask, don't tell" policy. His Facebook includes a photo of him at a gay rights rally, holding a sign demanding equality on "the battlefield." Further, he has posted anti-military comments on his Facebook page. An uncle describes him as "an introverted kid who loved computers and was fired up politically." That tantalizing reference is left hanging. Whether he was fired up about something other than gay rights remains unknown, for the moment. powerline

Another Arizona POV

Arizona can prevail on immigration law
“ Commentators are making overblown statements about the judge's order without having actually read it. As a lawyer who supports the enactment of state laws that promote comprehensive immigration enforcement, I offer this initial analysis to the beleaguered voters of Arizona:

Anonymous commenter sent me here.  While I'm somewhat buoyed by the writer's opinion, I'm also pretty much fed up with equivocatory decisions from milquetoasty judges,  which, in the author's best scenario, exactly describes Bolton's decision. REVOLUTIONARY WORDS

An Idea Which Time Has Come?

Chris Christie, Sarah Palin, and You

Yesterday a WaTimes editorial asked, and pretty much answered in the affirmative, "Should Arizona secede?"  Up the turnpikes, Investor's Business Daily asked "Will Washington's Failures Lead To Second American Revolution?"  Here's the opening chorus:

The Internet is a large-scale version of the "Committees of Correspondence" that led to the first American Revolution — and with Washington's failings now so obvious and awful, it may lead to another.

Boned Jello
People are asking, "Is the government doing us more harm than good? Should we change what it does and the way it does it?"

Pruning the power of government begins with the imperial presidency.

Too many overreaching laws give the president too much discretion to make too many open-ended rules controlling too many aspects of our lives. There's no end to the harm an out-of-control president can do.

Bill Clinton lowered the culture, moral tone and strength of the nation — and left America vulnerable to attack. When it came, George W. Bush stood up for America, albeit sometimes clumsily.

Barack Obama, however, has pulled off the ultimate switcheroo: He's diminishing America from within — so far, successfully.
(continue)
”

The editorial finishes: "
“

A wounded rampaging president can do much damage — and, like Caesar, the evil he does will live long after he leaves office, whenever that may be.

The overgrown, un-pruned power of the presidency to reward, punish and intimidate may now be so overwhelming that his re-election in 2012 is already assured — Chicago-style.

Muehler v. Mena

I'm not a lawyer, but neither, evidently, is the Attorny General
“ Muehler v. Mena, 544 U.S. 93 (2005), was a unanimous decision by the United States Supreme Court, which held that the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution allows detention of a search subject in handcuffs while a search is being conducted, and that it does not require officers to have an independent reasonable suspicion before questioning a subject about their immigration status. ”
Boned Jello
Not to mention that Rhode Island has been enforcing the same law without objection.  So, are these two just terminally stupid?  Or, rhetorically speaking,  are they just able to arrogantly ignore law inconvenient to their agenda. Either way, both are in violation of their respective Oath  of Office and ought be impeached.  But, considering the Democrat controlled Ethics panel wants Rangel reprimanded; least severe punishment., and the virtual certainty that Maxine Waters will also skate, the rule of  law will remain in the dust bin. As Eric Cartman is wont to say, I really hate those guys.

KUHNER: Should Arizona secede?
Choice between devolution and dissolution may be inevitable

“ Judicial activism is pushing America to the breaking point. This week, a federal judge blocked key provisions of Arizona's immigration law, thwarting the will of the people. The decision was ominous and will reverberate for years to come.

Judge Susan Bolton, appointed by former President Bill Clinton, is a liberal elitist who believes judicial imperialism trumps democracy. Her ruling states that local police cannot check the immigration status of people arrested or stopped for violations of the law. In her view, that would amount to an abuse of civil liberties and unduly burden the federal immigration system. She also stipulated that residents cannot be required to carry proof of legal status.

Her decision strikes at the very heart of the Arizona law, S.B. 1070. Supported by President Obama's Justice Department and the American Civil Liberties Union, the ruling sets the stage for a protracted legal battle. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer vows to appeal the ruling - all the way to the Supreme Court, if necessary. In the meantime, the people of Arizona - and America - will continue to endure the onslaught of illegal immigration.

Mr. Obama's decision to sue Arizona is a betrayal of his constitutional oath to secure our porous border.  [

100 Magazine articles

Boned Jello The Best Magazine Articles Ever

This is the only one of the 100  I remember reading.

My favorite magazine article, not on this list, was a name-forgotten short story in some sports 'zine.  Was about an oldtimey baseball game between rival towns. It was, as I remember, lengthy and rich in detail.  The payoff came with the homeboys nursing a one run lead.  The rival had  bases loaded, two outs, and a count of 0-2 on the batter in the bottom of the 9th.  The catcher's pants then  split as he crouched behind the plate.  This resulted in the pitcher seeing, not the two finger sign for fast ball, low and inside, but a three fingered call for high and away.    Two runs scored on the passed ball.

I'll download these, and read them on my home-made Kindle reader while I'm in waiting rooms.  Oh.  Frank Sinatra Has A Cold is a good read.

Comparing the Great Depression
 to the Great Recession

Boned Jello
“ President Roosevelt became Hoover on steroids. FDR and his advisers, despite some early moves to cut spending and control the deficit that Hoover left behind, decided that ever-larger federal spending would trigger economic expansion and pull the country out of its economic slump. Thus Roosevelt began the Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA), which paid farmers not to produce, and then expanded Hoover’s Reconstruction Finance Corporation, which provided bailout money to large banks and corporations. He also expanded spending on public works and targeted large subsidies to various special interests.

Boned Jello
President Obama, who often cites FDR, followed his example of targeting spending to interest groups. He signed into law a $787 billion stimulus package that sent tax dollars to various cities and voting groups across the nation. He later supported an expensive “jobs bill” that would send money into key congressional districts. The President also campaigned for a cap-and-trade bill and universal health coverage, both of which promised to increase the federal debt substantially. In fact, the increase in federal debt under Obama and Roosevelt is similar. The national debt more than doubled in Roosevelt’s first two terms, and it is projected to double again in eight to ten years. [full fury]
