Banana the Terrible

You can have fun with anything

Thomas Sowell's Pessimism

"Doomsters are a dime a dozen. But when a leading economist who's been called "the nation's greatest contemporary philosopher" sees serious trouble ahead, we'd better listen up.

Sowell sees the national equivalent of a "perfect storm," a gathering of "dangerous forces (that) have been building .. . for at least a half-century."

Yes, he says, our great nation has weathered many storms. But, he quickly notes, so did the Roman Empire before it collapsed. "Is that where America is headed?" Sowell asks upfront. "I believe it is. Our only saving grace is that we are not there yet - and that nothing is inevitable until it happens."......

The Obama administration "is not the root cause of the ominous dangers that face this country at home and aboard," Sowell says. But "it is the embodiment, the personification and the culmination of dangerous trends that began decades ago. Moreover, it has escalated those dangers to what may be a point of no return.  [Sowell's Pessimism]

Boned Jello
Opinions about the nexus of that perfect storm are also a dime a dozen, and in my case free of charge.  August 9, 1974.  The Nixon  bloodless coup.   Sowell's fifty-year parameter takes us to JFK's election, in effect the beginning of The Great Society.  Hard to argue that too.

Secession is still the only course of action I can think of.  Things will still be tough, but at least "we" will have the opportunity to rebuild without the constraints and gloom imposed by statist government. And, we'll have hope where none now exists.

Birther's Good Catch

Out, damn'd spot
“ I try to ignore the birther movement unless it inducts someone important -- a congressman, for example. The (sigh) American Patriot Foundation's announcement that Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney (ret.) has signed an affidavit supporting court martialed birther Lt. Col. Terry Lakin is actually a pretty big coup.

How wild is McInerney's statement? This wild: A Good Get for the Birthers.
”

I read the Lt. General Thomas McInerney story (the One Nice Deb posted on), and let it slide because I've been down this road countless times, only to be disappointed.  Just now Grumpyunk :alerted me to this SLATE article; A Good Get for the Birthers.  Maybe the reason it's  so much on Obama's mind is that he knows this one has legs?  I want closure on this thing.   And gloating rights.

Light-bulb socialism

Bright Lights Done
in By Dim Bulbs

Boned Jello
“B eginning today, it is a crime to manufacture or ship for sale a traditional 75-watt incandescent light bulb in the European Union. Autocrats in Brussels last year declared war on Edison's greatest invention with a ban on 100-watt lamps. Homes throughout the Old World will continue to dim until incandescent lighting of all types is snuffed out in 2012 - the same year the United States is scheduled to begin a phaseout schedule mirroring the European plan. [... light-bulb socialism] ”
The enabling legislation was an early bellwether for what a Democrat congress was capable of,  after the 2006 elections gave them control.  Crafted by John Dingel, and signed, for god knows what reason, by Bush, it was a victory for the now discredited AGW movement. Fit nicely with Democrat distaste for bright lighting, too.
Dingel's Bright Idea
If you've tried to purchase 100, or even 75 watt incandescent light bulbs lately, you know that manufacturers, cued no doubt by retailers, are already in compliance.  The ceiling floods we've been forced to buy are a disaster.  Switch on the kitchen light, and wait about 5 minutes.  That's how long it takes before full brightness is achieved.  Add it to the list of things  that must be repealed.

“ Two years ago, New Zealanders faced an imminent ban. The National Party, at the time in the minority, made overturning the light-bulb scheme a priority in its campaign against the ruling Labor government. The public responded favorably to the party that proclaimed that it "stands for freedom, choice, independence and ambition." In December 2008, the National Party  government overturned the light-bulb ban. Republican challengers seeking an edge over Democrats in November could learn a few things from the Kiwis. [ibid]

Boned Jello
“ And at the top of the page, is a rather interesting quote:

"The common law is the will of mankind, issuing from the life of the people."

Catchy, huh? Just one tiny little (too small to be relevant obviously) point -- the quote is from C. Wilfred Jenks, who in the 1930's was a leading proponent of the "international law" movement, which had as its goal to impose a global common law and which backed ‘global workers' rights.'

Call it Marxism, call it Progressivism, call it Socialism -- under any of those names it definitely makes the DOJ look corrupt in their sleek, new black website with Marxist accessories to match.

Iranian Media Says French

John Kusak Says Armey, Newt

I feel sorta bad here. Except for two words ("French" and "Armey)" I was feeling,  well, you know.  Oh stop!  It was involuntary.

Anyway, after what Hollywood did to Mel Gibson for his, mild in comparison, "ravings,"  I guess Joan Kusak's brother won't be able to buy a hello from movieland's glitterati.  They're a fiercely righteous bunch, those entertainment folks; all "duty, honor and country first" sorts, and don't tolerate behavior like this.

What I worry about is someone from the left assassinating Kusak, and trying to make it look like conservatives did it.  You know, like they did burning their own offices and such.  That sure would be a nasty trick (that would prolly succeed and allow the Democrats to pick up seats in the election), so I hope they don't "do" him. </disgust>

”

Boned Jello

"Dubois' suit contends he suffered permanent brain damage."  That may be hard to prove.  I do note that the shop teacher resigned, which opens the possibility that he assigned the nipple zapping, but I see that as doubtful. Either way, I'll let this incident stand as my answer to this bit of silliness.

Traffic Cams Ticketed!

Today's I'll Fix That For You
Receive a traffic cam ticket in the mail?
“ A Supreme Court  ruling last year requiring that scientists be made available to testify in court cases about lab evidence they prepare may have the added effect of curtailing the use of automated traffic-enforcement cameras to assess criminal penalties.
”
The crux of this story is that various courts have taken a cue from that SCOTUS lab evidence ruling,  and applied it to traffic and speed cams.
“ Judge Wilson said declarations submitted to the court  by the private enforcement company to support the red-light infractions "contain testimonial hearsay," without which the officer cannot identify the photographs as taken by the company, cannot attest they pertain to any actual traffic violation and cannot say with certainty the camera equipment was in working order at the time of the violation. ”
If states were really interested in protecting, not taxing the public, speed cams like this would be in use.
The effect of these rulings is that methods for obtaining, transmitting and storing information about infractions are "not admissible in the absence of a live witness with personal knowledge of the procedures."  Which translates into requiring speed cam suppliers to send technicians to testify at ticket hearings.  There are not enough technicians, and they're too far away to travel to every court hearing anyway.  Cases are being thrown-out wholesale.  This of course will have the same effect on tax hungry city officials as failing to pay Louie the loan-shark his vigorish.  Stay tuned.

ASIDE:
Mo Sup makes regular trips to Tidewater,VA to see family.  During a recent trip she noticed that the yellow light timing at stop lights in Gloucester had gone from something reasonable,  to about 1 second. The thought occurred to her that this is precisely what Baltimore City did when when traffic cams were installed.  She skoonched  forward at a stop light, and looked up.  Sure enough,  perched high atop a pole - the camera. My suggestion that she use her 9mm to shoot the sumbitch fell on deaf ears however. She's such a pussy sometimes.

Felony Chutzpah

The "C" Word (chutzpah)
T his year's debate over extending President George W. Bush's tax cuts has turned into a brawl over which party is doing more for small businesses, with assertions that the health of the economy and thousands of future jobs are at stake.
”
Obama claims that not that many small businesses will see taxes rise if the Bush tax cuts expire.  Which would necessarily mean that those tax cuts were negligible to begin with?   Besides, says Obama, his  first order of business when congress returns from its summer recess will be to pass a bill aimed at "enticing" banks to loosen up small business loan requirements.  A plan formulated by Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, and Maxine Waters no doubt.  Even the WaTimes reporter gets caught up in sub plots involving dueling "think tank" minutiae here.  Two indisputable facts remain, however.
  1.  Killing the Bush tax cuts results in a huge tax increase for somebody.
  2. Obama the Marxist's claim that he is a champion of business growth is felony chutzpah.

Weasel Clark

General Clark

Boned Jello

This is pretty neat.  But first, I always figured that Wesley Clark's boyhood hero was Gen. George B. McClellan.  Clark certainly emulated Mac.
  • Both  West Point "ring-knockers"
  • Both  removed from command by the president who appointed them.
  • Both back-stabbing opportunists.
  • Both attacked a president during wartime.
  • Both ran for president as Democrats, on a surrender monkey platform
  • Both Losers
McClellan, at least, was always insubordinate towards Lincoln.  Clark, however, was on record extolling the capabilities and virtue of the very man he was now attacking (probably influencing James Webb in the bargain).  Gen. Clark may be best known for the Battle of Waco.  His alliance with Janet Reno, and Texas Gov.Ann Richardson led to a stunning victory against the insurgent Branch Davidians; racking up a stunning  74-0 kill ratio!  But, I digress again.

Clark is in Illinois today, stumping for Democrat Senate Alexi Giannoulias,  who's running against Mark Kirk. In The Uniforms They Wear: Kirk and Giannoulias, Daniel Halper takes an interesting look at  the three man, and the battle dress they wore at a point in history.

Beware Mosqued Men

Feds probe fire at Tenn.

Boned Jello

A conundrum. The Golden Rule, sliced and diced any which way you like, is at the heart of civilized society, and certainly Christianity.  But not Islam.  I can love my Islamic neighbor (don't be a weisenheimer), but hate his endemically Islamic hatred for me.  If he doesn't hate my Christianity, then he doesn't subscribe to the Koran's teachings, and therefore isn't a Mahometan, and doesn't need a mosque.  Am I right?

Allowing mosques to be raised here is the equivalent of allowing Hitler to build Schutzstaffel training camps throughout the 1942 United States; it's insane.  But, since bombing and burning them is a lawless act, I sure do hope the feds can put a stop to it.  Of course, there is  Justice Robert H. Jackson's consideration, "The Constitution is not a suicide pact."  The answer then is simple. Don't allow new mosques to be built, and tear down the existing.  See how simple that was?

A nurturing WaPost examined reasons for the cataclysmic failure of AGW apostles to get "cap and trade" passed into law.  There's "The oil industry has tremendous reach and control in the United States Senate."  There's the poor economy. There's " ... green groups don't have enough of Washington's two currencies of power: money and angry voters."  But - not one of the 1248 words in this green hair shirt is  fraud, or climate-gate.  Or Gore.  How did they manage that? Is Obama a Christian?

Boned Jello
“M ore significantly, he said in his Cairo speech to the Muslim world that Islam is a revealed religion. I'm amazed this didn't get more attention because it is extremely anomalous for a believing Christian to refer to Islam as a revealed religion.

The word "revealed" had to have been carefully chosen and was absolutely unnecessary to convey his overtures to the Muslim world. One needn't affirm another person's religion to extend him a hand of friendship and peace.

Words have meaning, and if Obama believes Islam was revealed ... [David Limbaugh]

Blurts

The old 'no teleprompter' Freudian slip.

“ Obama, speaking with NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams on Sunday ... asked Obama why so many people were uncertain about something so fundamental as his faith.

“I can’t spend all of my time with my birth certificate plastered on my forehead,” quipped Obama, who took a deep breath to gather his thoughts when asked if the poll reflected his inability to communicate with voters. [
Obama blasts lies, disinformation]
”
Boned Jello
The question of whether Obama's  a Moslem, or not, has nothing to do with a birth certificate.  So, what's on your mind Mr. Hussein Obama? George Stephanopoulos, of course, would have bailed him out with, "You mean Baptismal certificate, right? Too bad,  Williams is without benefit of experience with the Clintons all those years, and was just not up to the job. That's my guess.

Ryan v RINOs

GOP flinching at budget spending cuts plan
The enemy within
“T he fact that [Rep. Paul D. Ryan's 'Roadmap for America's Future' ] only has 13 co-sponsors is a big reason why our folks are agitated against the Republicans as well as the Democrats," he [Dick Armey] said Sunday on NBC's Meet The Press  The difference between being a co-sponsor with Ryan or not is a thing called courage. [read and roar]
”
Skinheads
This simple reminder from a news account of the Beck rally jostled me out of a stupor.

“ The tea party is essentially a loosely organized band of anti-tax, libertarian-leaning political newcomers who are fed up with Washington ”

Fed up with Washington includes pissant GOP leadership, and RINO lickspittles who hope to ride this wave into the majority without any willingness to change themselves. If the number one pressing problem is the economy, and it certainly is, then this is a time for clearing the deck of all impediments to economic growth, and the slashing of budgets. And look! Democrats are dangling their own roadmap to success; their rebuttal to Ryan's 'Roadmap.'

“ Candidates backing this budget plan have shown themselves to be out of touch with struggling families in these tough economic times because they're backing a plan to dismantle Medicare as we know it and turn Social Security over to Wall Street banks," said Jesse Ferguson, southern regional press secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. [Flinching]
”

Either you respect the public's ability to spot this hollow "out of touch" prattle for what it is; and realize that the public is receptive to extreme life saving action, or you're just another problem.  If Republicans don't have the steel to trim existing entitlements, what chance is there that they will over-turn Obamacare?  My fervent hope is that we take the House with enough Tea-Party newcomers to deny Boehner Bob Dole  the Speakership, and elect someone like Ryan.

The Note

In-depth analysis

Mahometans Give Obama Highest
Job Approval; Mormons, Lowest
Jews and those with no religious affiliation also give Obama above-average ratings
No  real surprises here.  Moslems, atheists, Scientologists, Unitarians, and Gaians are pretty much happy with Ol' Blue-lips.  The most liberal plantation-bound groups in the nation are blacks and Jews, so the 61% Jewish number, a 16% fall from a year ago, is actually a spiritual moment for them.  If you're on the Catholic team, as I am, it's disturbing to see that 50% of us are not practicing Catholics at all, but self indulgent dilettantes.  But then, this is a Gallup Poll.

Dems Hiding from the Allies

There's an awful lot
of this being reported

D emocrats in Washington don't want to talk about the bills they passed since Obama took office. "In an effort coordinated with the White House, congressional leaders are urging Democrats to focus less on bragging about what they have done -- a landmark health-care law, a sweeping overhaul of Wall Street regulation and other far-reaching policy changes -- and more on efforts to fix the economy and on the perils of Republican control of Congress," the Los Angeles Times reported earlier this month.

"And in an effort to turn attention to their opponents, Democrats from Obama on down have taken to warning that giving Republicans control of Congress would be akin to reelecting George W. Bush."

I've been doing blog housekeeping.  Updated the blog roll. Added a few folks, including I Hate the Media, which is, for me, the perfectly executed blog.  If you like it here, you'll love it there.  Top props.   Example:

To paraphrase the Turtles, “Eleanor, gee, I think you’re swill”

ASIDE-FWIW
I get a few E-mails a month offering to swap links.  There's nothing wrong with that; it's how you enhance your blog presence, but I just don't see a reason to have dozens of links to sites I don't visit.  Only 13 blogs on my current blog roll have ever, to my knowledge, linked to me, so that's not how they got there. Plus, I'm not at all certain that any of them have benefited by being on my list.
