The Streisand effect and a cold mountain-top

GREEN CRAP

In Days of Old, When Knights were Bold, and Rubbers weren't invented—

It's manifestly evident that Greens have no interest in the science that clearly, and overwhelmingly, show that AGW (man caused climate change) is utter crap.  Yes, in days of yore all of them would have been left on a chilly mountain-top to die, by parents who instinctively recognized (they could actually smell it back then) that their new baby was a genetically flawed mutant who, allowed to survive, would corrupt the gene pool.  Some obviously cheated. Thanks to science, they get to live and multiply now.   Sigh.

Anyway, a little while ago Mark Steyn wrote this piece for NRO.

In the wake of Louis Freeh’s report on Penn State’s complicity in serial rape, Rand Simberg writes of Unhappy Valley’s other scandal:

I’m referring to another cover up and whitewash that occurred there two years ago, before we learned how rotten and corrupt the culture at the university was. But now that we know how bad it was, perhaps it’s time that we revisit the Michael Mann affair, particularly given how much we’ve also learned about his and others’ hockey-stick deceptions since. Mann could be said to be the Jerry Sandusky of climate science, except that instead of molesting children, he has molested and tortured data in the service of politicized science that could have dire economic consequences for the nation and planet

Much to everyone's amusement (anticipating the Streisand effect, don't you know), Mann threatened to sue Steyn.  All this led to Anthony Watt's must read column, Best Michael Mann headline evah.

The  point being then, that if we must suffer this plague of climate charlatans and their client asshats, let's at least have fun with them.  I think that's from Alinsky.  Plus, it's ingrained human behavior to want someone to feel superior too, and here they serve me.

As the 21st head of the Ban clan, a line of ninja that can trace its history back some 500 years, the 63-year-old former engineer  is considered by some to be the last living guardian of the nation's feudal spies.

"I think I'm called (the last ninja) as there is probably no other person who learned all the skills that were directly" handed down from ninja masters over the last five centuries, he said. [Full w/pictutes]

Truily Random Numbers

Gary Larsen

                                                                     SCIENCE
TRULY RANDOM NUMBERS

Having once toiled as a spreadsheet designer (engineer my card read), I can appreciate the significance of this- if not entirely understand it.

Random numbers are invaluable. They’re used in the encryption that makes online banking secure. Economists, physicists, pollsters, and casinos rely on them. Yet until recently, producing large sets of truly random digits has been hard to do.
[...]
The age of computers solved all of this, right? Wrong. The best that CPUs can generate are pseudo-random numbers, churned out by running a seed number through a complex algorithm, then running the solution through the same operation over and over again. However, anyone who uncovers the algorithm and seed can generate the same sequence of number.
[Here's the WTF part]
But now scientists at the Australian National University have introduced a technique for generating 5.7 billion truly random values per second. They do it by harnessing the fundamental uncertainty of the universe. Their technique measures quantum phenomena in a box completely devoid of photons, where ghostly virtual particles randomly burble in and out of existence 24/7. “God does not play dice,” Einstein famously quipped in response to evidence that randomness rules the cosmos. Luckily, he was wrong. [Full]

An Irishman's Sailing Commentary

Must be a Kennedy

Perhaps - no, not perhaps, this is the most precious moment of the Olympics.  This Irish sailing commentator’s analysis of a contentious Olympic race is utterly priceless.

The video contains expert analysis of the race, such as “the race is looking very close… and confusing” and “it’s a very confusing scene here we don’t know who’s in the lead.”

He points out the “idiots watching from the sidelines… there’s a lot of fuckers there for what is essentially a very, very boring sport.”

As Belarus’ sailboat appears, the commentator notes, rightly, that “they are not so good on the water it seems… questionable human rights records for that country as well.”

Watch the clip until the very end — we promise the payoff is worth it.

Which is more important: some guy in Missouri saying something idiotic or the Syrian conflict spreading to neighboring countries?

Just wondering.

This is a quite impressive presentation of data by Henry Blodget, and  none of this is meant to attack that effort. But, people with an ideology, and in economics that's everybody, will have it leaking out in their produce.  Especially when they begin, "politics aside"  So who is this guy?

A respected economist and owner of Business Insider, Blodget also has a chair on Huffington Post where he writes stuff  with a political tone and tenor like " Are Wackos With Guns Just a Fact Of Life in America?," in case you're wondering.   He also had some jousts with the late Andrew Brietbart.  Still, his charts will (like the Bible) be used by anyone to prove  anything they  want to prove (ahem).  Almost none of them will have the foggiest idea of  it's underlying data.

I already know which charts the Obama media will be using for the next 20 years, and so will you.  When I looked at these chrats all I saw was federal government - Godzilla- on steroids.  Massive growth of a machine which only function is to grow.  I liked this guy's comment, because I at least understand it.

Todays apt (maybe dual?) metaphor
Res Ipsa Loquitor

-or is it more than stupid?

Stupid is as stupid does .... or is it more than stupid?

Supposedly Biden has been banished from the campaign trail for making idiotic statements, but what about Obama?  "Knocks Romney for Not Releasing Medical Records, Hasn't Disclosed His Own?"  Is he daft? Look, Biden is stupid, really stupid, but Obama transcends stupidity.  This is more "in your face," pathology at work here.  Has to be.  The popular view is he's a narcissist whose world revolvers around only him.  But  a psychotherapist in Berkeley, whose nom de plume is Robin of Berkeley. thinks otherwise

Many people attribute Obama's oddness to his narcissism. True, Obama has a gargantuan ego, and he is notoriously thin-skinned.

Res Ipsa LoquitorYet a personality disorder like narcissism does not explain Obama's strangeness: his giggling while being asked about the economy; his continuing a shout-out rather than announcing the Ft. Hood shootings; or his vacations, golfing, partying and fundraising during the calamitous oil spill.

Take also Obama's declaring on the "Today Show" that he wants to know whose ass to kick. Consummate narcissists would never stoop to this vulgar display of adolescent machismo.

Obama is flat when passion is needed; he's aggressive when savvy is required. What's most worrisome is that Obama doesn't even realize that his behavior is inappropriate.

So if it's not just simple narcissism, what is wrong with Obama? Since I've never evaluated him, I can't say for sure. But I can hazard some educated guesses.

Dr. Robin consders Asperger's Syndrome: "also known as high-functioning autism, Asperger's causes deficits in social skills. A person with Asperger's can't read social cues. Consequently, he can be insensitive and hurtful without even knowing it."

Robin also wonders about a family history of mental illness.

Obama's family tree is replete with the unbalanced. His maternal great-grandmother committed suicide. His grandfather, Stanley Dunham, was particularly unhinged: He was expelled from high school for punching his principal; named his daughter Stanley because he wanted a boy; and exposed young Barry to not just drunken trash talk, but unrestricted visits with alleged pedophile Frank Marshall Davis (who might or might not be Obama's biological father). Barack Sr. was an abusive, alcoholic bigamist.
Since mental illness runs in the family, does Obama have any signs? Yes and no. No, he is not a schizophrenic babbling about Martians. But there are red flags for some other conditions.

One way or another, it's pretty certain that we gave the house key to an avowed Marxist who may also be an axe murderer.  JFC!

The full Robin@Berkeley article (2010) "A Shrink Asks: What's Wrong with Obama?" is still a very good read.

Let me reiterate.  I, and I think most people, will gladly welcome anyone who enters this country legally, and certainly Mexicans whose culture I love.  Well, the food anyway.  And the work ethic.  The rest,  not so much, being formed as it was in a corrupt state where theft and bribery in order to survive are a way of life.  Which is why, I guess, they see nothing wrong in disobeying our law.

Pubic Hair War

Physician: ‘Hands Off That Pubic Hair’

You're probably thinking, as I did, that "oh gee,  here's another culture scandalmonger trying to stop the manufacture of  those very fashionable (and pricey) pubic hair coats."  But you'd be wrong.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (CBS Seattle) One doctor is calling for the end to the “war on pubic hair.”

Family physician Emily Gibson made headlines recently for her public assertion that modern women should shy away from the practice of bikini waxing – which she referred to as the “war on pubic hair” – as the practice increases risk of various infections.

“Pubic hair does have a purpose, providing cushion against friction that can cause skin abrasion and injury … [its] removal naturally irritates and inflames the hair follicles left behind, leaving microscopic open wounds,” she noted.

The risk also extends to sexually transmitted diseases.

Said Gibson, “Some clinicians are finding that freshly shaved pubic areas and genitals are also more vulnerable to herpes infections due to the microscopic wounds being exposed to virus carried by mouth or genitals. It follows that there may be vulnerability to spread of other [sexually transmitted infections] as well.”

Hair removal in the United States grosses $2.1B a year, which minus the cost of duct tape, is pure profit.  The Dr. does make a legitimate point about why women are born with this protection against infection (why men too?  Beats me), but I imagine a bad economy will work its magic and restore order.

They Call Him 'Mr. President"

Obama’s trash-talking competitiveness, a trait that has defined him since his days on the court as a basketball-obsessed teenager in Hawaii, was on display one night last February, when the president spotted a woman he knew was close to Sen. Marco Rubio in a Florida hotel lobby. “Is your boy going to go for [vice president]?” the president asked her. Maybe, she replied.

“Well,” he said, chuckling, according to a person who witnessed the encounter. “Tell your boy to watch it. He might get his ass kicked.” - [Book excerpt]

TECHNO THRILLS

Drone on

thoR~ sent me this link to a drone with a built in camera for the commercial market (Buy one here).

Comment under the video:  "The AR 2.0 cannot do what is demonstrated in this video, this was a fancy commercial. The battery lasts about 8 minutes and you cant pilot it using just the camera due to the delay. Plus any wind and you cannot control it with any sort of direction. Wifi range is short. That being said, it's still some high tech fun for $300"

So, this is a baby step.  Yes, I know that experienced RC enthusiasts have more options, but they can be quite expensive, and impossible to fly (ever buy one of those little battery powered helicopters?) unless you have already crashed about $10,000 worth while learning.

Anyway, when the technology gets to a point where our drones can compete with (destroy) domestic government drones, they will be made illegal to own.

October Surprise

Foreign policy October surprise?

ALISYN CAMEROTA: Is it possible that [Biden's] an asset and not a liability. Is that even possible?

COULTER: It’s an excellent point. I think any distraction from the economy, from the jobless rate, from just the haplessness of this president is probably a good distraction. I think the big distraction to watch out for is going to be probably a foreign policy October surprise, maybe allowing Israel to attack Iran, because I think the president is going to need a Hail Mary pass before the election.

Ann expresses what a lot of us are worried about, that this guy is willing to use the Mayan calender as a hedge, if necessary.  At the same time she annoys the hell out of me with little backhanded jabs at Sarah Palin, like this.

And the other reason I think Biden’s gaffes aren't that damaging to the president is because the media is so playing a part in this campaign. I think this is going to be the worst media bias we’ve seen since the 1992 election. We can bring back those old bumper stickers. It was “Annoy the Media - Vote Bush.” Now it’s “Annoy the Media – Vote Romney.” Because Biden does say all kinds of crazy things. I don’t know if you remember his debate with Sarah Palin, you know, Sarah Palin who they describe as an utter airhead. She didn't say half the crazy things Biden said. I mean, it was misstatement of fact after misstatement of fact, and there was precisely one network that mentioned the misstatements of fact by Joe Biden.

Half the crazy things?  Sarah didn't say anything "crazy," in any appearance, anywhere. There's a girl thing going on with Ann. I know her.

Departures - A Japanes Film - 5 Stars

   At The Cinema

Daigo Kobayashi  a cellist in Tokyo, loses his job when his orchestra is disbanded. He decides to move back to his hometown, with his wife Mika. Daigo's family used to run a small coffee shop. His father ran away with the waitress when Daigo was very young, and his mother raised him by herself. His mother died two years ago, and left him the house where he grew up. Daigo feels guilty about not having taken better care of his mother.

Back home, Daigo finds an advertisement in the newspaper for "assisting departures". He goes to the interview, uncertain of the job's nature. He is hired on the spot after only one question ("Will you work hard?") and being handed an "advance" by his new boss Sasaki . He discovers that the job involves preparing the dead. Daigo reluctantly accepts. He returns to his wife with sukiyaki for a celebration, but he tells her he will be performing some sort of ceremony. [Wikipedia]

I'm  something of a foreign film buff, but Japanese movies are not among my favorite genre.  They seem to fall into two categories: extreme overstated Samurai culture, or bizarre, overstated Japanese humor (everything Japanese seems to be bizarre and  overstated).  Departures is the best Japanese film I've ever seen (NetFlix). Hell, I think it's the best movie I've watched all year.  It worked (for me) on many levels.
  1. It was damned interesting
  2. I liked the characters, immensely
  3. Superb,understated acting
  4. It was spiritually moving
Oh, it won the 2009 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, something I didn't know until I was getting the clip.   I rather think the Japanese "send-off"  is far, far superior to the way we do it. Turning loved ones into wax figures, with mouths stitched closed, and with no family involvement in the process, save for paying for it.

PETA would never approve: This grisly 1840 doll-sized butcher shop with miniature animal carcasses and a floor covered in sawdust and blood would be shockingly graphic to our modern sensibilities. After all, here in the 21st century, we like to remain cheerfully oblivious about where our meat products come from.

But in Victorian times, such detailed model butcher shops were not uncommon, says Sarah Louise Wood, a curator at the Museum of Childhood at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The real question is: Why exactly do such things exist? [Full story with delightful pictures]

I'm almost moved to write a thesis based on just this sort of thing—people growing up in a sheltered and sterile society.  But who needs another "F " on his resume? Anyway, you already know what I mean.

Did the SEIU outline Obamacare? Yes.

Book: Obamacare law designed to unionize 21 million health care workers

In ”Shadowbosses: Government Unions Control America and Rob Taxpayers Blind,” Mallory Factor describes a December 9, 2008 memo from Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Healthcare president Dennis Rivera to the Obama-Biden transition team.

That memo outlined a legislative proposal calling for “increasing the capacity of the health care workforce” as part of a larger health care reform initiative.
The SEIU and the Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), Factor writes, later coordinated with other public-sector unions to spend “literally hundreds of millions of dollars promoting Obamacare.”

A booklet published by SEIU during the 2008 election season called for “building a new American health care system,” in part by “organizing workers.” The publication argued for outcomes nearly identical to those later adopted in the Obamacare legislation

How does it work?  Simple.   The number of health care workers receiving payment for their services through government programs will skyrocket, effectively making them government employees in the eyes of the beholder..

“The government employee unions can then enlist pro-union state governments to treat these health care workers as ‘government employees and unionize them just like they unionized the care providers” themselves.

“For every million additional health care workers unionized in the 27 non-right-to-work states the unions stand to earn $1 billion in dues.” [Full]
